Filming for ‘Stalemate’ is Underway!

It is such an awesome feeling to finally start filming on a project that’s been in planning stages and rehearsals for months. Actors Alex Parker and Jacob Fike have been rehearsing diligently for weeks and were excited to finally put their newly found stunt skills to work in front of the camera. Filming began Thursday, June 29 at the Allen County Farm Park, part of the Johnny Appleseed Park District. I hope to have a short teaser trailer developed from the footage by the end of this week so you can see how things are coming along.

We originally planned to begin filming at another location, but last-minute issues caused us to abandon that location. However, Park District Director Kevin Haver came through for us on extremely short notice and gave us free reign of some awesome wooded territory behind the Farm Park for two days of filming. The area was available by reservation only so we were unhampered by park-goers and got more filming done than we would have had we been filming in the public parks as originally planned. So, a big, big thank you to Director Haver and the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.

Our third day of shooting took place on the property of Rick and Katie Parker, parents of Stalemate star Alex Parker. The thick, dense, brambly woods behind their field are perfect for the chase scenes and shooting scenes. We’ll have a couple more shooting days there before we wrap up. Next time we’ll remember to bring mosquito bombs though. Thank you, so much Mr. and Mrs. Parker for loaning us your woods (and for letting us beat up your son on camera – ha ha). We really appreciate your support of the arts!

While 99% of the Stalemate cast, crew and resources are local, we did bring in one outsider for the three days of shooting. My sister, Laurie Fike, is certified in special effects makeup for film. She was kind enough to drive out from the Chicago area at her own expense (along with some contributions from Stalemate patron Sharon Burner in Elgin, IL) to assist with battle wound makeup for the movie. I am tempted to show off some photos of her work, especially her work from Day Three, which was particularly phenomenal, but that would just spoil things. You’ll have to wait for the movie release to see her final work. For now, you’ll have to settle for pics of her working on the actors.

We still have a few shooting days left. As of yet, they aren’t scheduled. At least one of those days will include the big stunt scene. Sorry, no hints as to what that stunt will be. But we are planning something pretty spectacular — especially for a xtreme low-budget film.

Speaking of budget . . . we are still seeking contributions from patrons who would like to support the Stalemate project. All patrons and contributors will get credits in the final movie as well as mention on the website and in many of our promotions. Currently we need contributions to support safety gear and set supplies for our big stunt scene. Please visit the main Stalemate page to find out more about our specific needs and how you can contribute.
